Abaqus Performance with Gaming Hardware

A foray in gaming hardware testing with the Abaqus solver
As discussed before, there is a significant performance gain to be obtained with using multi-core GPGPU acceleration with the Abaqus solver. The official support for GPGPU from Dassault Systèmes is limited to professional-grade GPU, the Quadro line from NVIDIA and AMD Radeon W9100 while expectations on the CPU-side are higher throughput with high-end processors such as Intel Xeon and AMD EPYC.

But what about gaming hardware, such as NVIDIA GeForce or AMD Ryzen processor? Even though we wouldn't recommend or vouch for any unsupported hardware for our customers, the experiment is tempting to say the least.

We took our GeForce GTX1080 for a spin with Abaqus 2019 and got some pretty stunning results, up to 5x speedups in some instances:

Similarly, the Abaqus solver scales very well with core count on our 8-core AMD Ryzen 7:
